In the northwest corner of the contiguous United States you will find an archipelago known as the San Juan Islands. These gorgeous islands, part of the State of Washington, are located between the U.S. mainland and Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The Washington State Ferries system provides convenient passenger ferry access to four of the islands in the archipelago, which is defined as north of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, south of Boundary Pass, east of Haro Strait and west of Rosario Strait. North of the San Juan Islands are the open waters of the Strait of Georgia, within the Salish Sea.
Though heavily logged in the 19th century, today the San Juan Islands have lush forests full of Douglas fir, Pacific madrone, red alder, and bigleaf maple trees. This breathtakingly beautiful area is also home to the nation’s greatest concentration of bald eagles, as well as a host of blue herons, black oystercatchers, trumpeter swans, Canadian geese, barred owls, and endangered marbled murrelets. These amazing islands are also well known for their resident pods of orcas and the many harbor seals, river otters, Steller sea lions, minke whales, and Dall’s porpoises. Clearly, the San Juan Islands is a nature-lover’s paradise!
A popular tourist destination, the San Juan Islands are a great place for sea kayaking and whale-watching by boat or from the air. The San Juan Islands comprise San Juan County, Washington and boast more than 400 islands and rocks with 478 miles of shoreline, but only 128 of these are named. Most of the islands are very hilly and their coastlines are a combination of rocky and sandy beaches, placid and reef-studded bays, deep and shallow harbors. There are no bridges to the San Juan Islands so all travel to the islands is via air or water.
